Those grenades didn't use pins, they used a friction fuse. Unscrewing the cap at the bottom would drop a small weight attached to a string out of the handle which is Hollow. You then pull the string and chuck it for all it's worth.

Note: this style of grenade is called a "potato masher".

Judging from the comments, it's not common knowledge.

Being a fan of World War era weaponry, I saw the joke immediately :D I had hoped more people would get it though.

I love that this is in the clever pool, despite the focal character's lack of attention.

Meanwhile at the gate of the 501st JFW base...

"Hey Louis, have you seen my grenade?" A Karlslander corporal asked.

"If you are talking about your "Potato Masher", I think Lieutenant Hartmann took it, Joseph" Louis, a Liberion private answered

"Why would Hartmann want to do with my grenade?" Joseph said.

    "Evacuate the Kitchen!" Minna shouts.

"Well that answers your question doesn't it, Joseph" Louis said.

    "Mein Gott" Joseph said

To this day, Erica is still forbidden from cooking in the kitchen~ They still haven't gotten all the shrapnel out of the ceiling after all.
