Maybe an experiment, trying to protect the window using tape as a shield and failed hard during the process.

Breaking and Entering 101 -- The idea is indeed to break the glass, but to do so without breaking the entire window, which would cause unnecessary amounts of broken glass to cut yourself on, and unwanted amounts of noise alerting those around you. Once you've broken enough to safely put an arm through, you can peel away the tape (thus pulling away the free glass), reach in, unlock the window, and slide it open to let yourself in.
