Well if it reminds you of it, then it probably was influential on the director Kamiyama Kenji, since they gave him kind of a blank slate to work with on this series and it seems he's loved the Gundam series for awhile. This blank slate seems to be the approach he took after reminding himself he wasn't bound trying to just simply make replacements for existing factions or Gundam concepts, and that he was given the opportunity to make a Gundam completely from the ground up.
