BA girls can't see their halos, right? So even if they could paint them somehow, they wouldn't be able to disguise them?

Not quite, they see all halos as generic mob halos. Painting them should be possible in theory, though it begs the question of what would happen to the paint once the halo disappears because of sleep etc.

Are their halos even tangible? Because if they are, then life must be very inconvenient, what with them constantly getting hit by or caught in things.

    They're intangible.

    *incosistently tangible
We know that they can take damage from being hit directly and take permanent damage, as told during the Trinity story.
Though I am pretty sure that there's been official media where they've been shown to clip through objects.

No, it's never actually stated that Halos can be damaged. The "Halo Destroying Bomb" was special specifically because it could "damage" halos, something normally not known to be possible.

In actuality, though, it was just a normal bomb with enough power to lethally injure a student. It didn't have any special properties beyond being stronger than what students are normally throwing at eachother on a daily basis.

If Halos could be damaged directly, students would be dying daily, because even if you're not aiming for it, bullets are going to hit them eventually, not to mention explosives. "Destroying a halo" is just a euphemism for taking a student's life. The Arius students confirm this.
