Some people need to learn the difference between fiction and reality.
Knowing the difference between fiction and reality doesn't mean pretending they don't influence each other, if they didn't, propaganda, public awareness campaigns, inspirational movies, and works that changed public opinion would never have worked
Furthermore, history is full of examples of people bringing elements of fiction into the real world, afamous case is the Japanese serial killer Tsutomu Miyazaki, who was obsessed with violent and grotesque media and incorporated many of those fantasies into the harm he inflicted on real women, ihat doesn't mean fiction created him, but it does show that there is an interaction between media consumption and human behavior
So saying "it's fiction" doesn't actually answer the criticism, nobody is claiming that fictional characters are suffering in real life, the point is that fiction is part of culture: it influences people and is influenced by them. The very fact that you're defending this content is proof that it has meaning in the real world, if it didn't, nobody would care enough to defend it or criticize it
