Not sure it's anything specific about the site, other than that diving (scuba, freediving, etc.) is inherently risky, and it's a popular spot. It seems that a different "Blue Hole," near Dahab on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, is more notorious as a "divers' graveyard," because getting to a deep underwater arch that connects the sinkhole to the Gulf of Aqaba is a serious challenge that less experienced divers should not attempt.
