The Eight-Eight Fleet Plan

Amagi: After the cancellation of the plan, she was originally scheduled to be converted into a carrier along with Akagi. However, the damage from a large earthquake caused her to be scapped. In her place, Kaga was converted into a carrier. Tosa: Kaga's sister ship. After the cancellation of the plan, she was used as target ship for guns, torpedoes and mines, providing important data. In the end she was scuttled. Kii: Designed using the Amagi-class blueprints, this class was a continuation of the preceding Amagi-class, but with improved armor. The keel-laying was never completed. Battlecruiser No. 8: Designed to be superior to the capital ships of all other nations, was planned to be equipped with eight 46cm (8-in) guns, arranged in four turrets. It only got as far as basic design before being cancelled. At the same time, the US was also embarking on its biggest shipbuilding project, "Daniel's Plan" (3-year plan). But after the First World War, the plan was greatly revised, and in the end was cancelled after the Washington Treaty was signed.

Regarding Amagi, Takao and Atago, although the above depictions are based on the character designs of the existing cruisers and carrier, they are the same in name only and not related.

EIGHT BATTLESHIPS, EIGHT BATTLECRUISERS, this was the Japanese Navy's ambitious plan to create capital ships as the centerpiece of the fleet. Shortly after the capital ship construction had started, the Washington Treaty was signed. Due to the limitations, the construction of all ships except the ones already laid down were cancelled. This plan was a complete failure.
