They could have done a post like post #9606793, which had something vaguely resembling a decent point, but instead they went straight to mocking the story of the game and its players.
That alone speaks volumes about their methods and intentions.

In 2023, PETA shelters took in over 3,100 cats and dogs. Of those 3,100 animals, over 2,400 were euthanized. Notably, in 2017, PETA settled a lawsuit that said that in 2014, PETA shelter workers took a chihuahua that belonged to a 9-year-old girl under the claims that it was unattended and a stray, where it was euthanized that same day in violation of state law that required a five day grace period.

...oh so I guess I might have imagined PETA completely shuttering a few years ago was something I imagined in my head.

PETA clearly never played the game or watched the anime... Suzuka's demise was brought up at least three times in the franchise's history with as much care as the horse deserves (helps that Suzu's jockey is Yutaka Take, who does uma commercials and all), and the first time was anime season 1... All the way back in 2018.
