It all may be the closest thing to real serious lewdness we've gotten from Illustrious for sure!

I mean these games are typically built with sort of the implication from the start the player character is effectively the only male surrounded by women.

At least one character (Nevada) uses male terms to refer to the player character in the original Japanese text and voice lines, and she was in the game at launch. Numerous characters, especially more recently, use innuendo and gestures that only make sense if the Commander is male.
And, as GreyOmega said, these games are almost universally intended to primarily appeal to a male demographic. That's why it's filled with attractive, scantily clad women.
Same thing as with moving away from the core audience to appeal to wider audience, alienating part of the existing player base. It wouldn't have been an issue if that was their approach from the beginning rather than superficially pretending that the pov character is whatever you want them to be.

I haven't paid attention to the game in four years, I don't have an issue. I merely answered your question because it applies to more than just AL.
