On a whim, I read through the twitter replies to this image and its predecessor. Maybe this is me going "out of touch old fart" mode but like....what the fuck happened to the internet in the last ten years? When did this bizarre moral puritanism become so prominent? Over a fucking anime catgirl.

Now to be fair, I see a lot, maybe even a majority of comments commending the artist for not backing down or really giving the haters the time of day, so maybe it's one of those "the most fringe voices are also the loudest" situations.

I've recently seen I think a couple people saying we're really in the thick of a "Satanic Panic" type of situation with anime / manga and related lately. It's something that's only been getting worse over the years. Every time these social media situations turn into everyone being nasty to each other, and often for unrelated reasons, so it just makes everyone look bad. I think a lot of it is probably younger people that are terminally online. It's all a massive headache.

A far more homogenized internet that's forcing people who once had more insulated communities to interact with each other. I also think it's platforms like twitter getting more desperate for engagement and engineering algorithms that deliberately propagate echo chambers, toxic behavior and culture war nonsense

Yeah algorithms really add to the issue.

So is the outrage just because Izutsumi exists, or are they protesting because Laios' interest in monsters isn't sexual and getting worked up over fanart? I can't actually see the twitter replies.

They're upset that a shitpost "mischaracterized" Laios. But then they also accuse the artist of supporting bestiality as if Izutsumi was an animal, so it's the usual hypocrite tourists looking for stupid things to get mad about.

You see, everything started around 2013 when Obama's first presidential cycle was almost over. Influencers made hate popular to be trending and visible on Internet, Kotaku was pushing their Gamergate agenda and Republicans noticed they could recruit new voters via siding with canceling mobs. Since then people and any political party has been organizing virtual hate mobs to gain followers, votes or popularity to aspire political positions. If there's anyone trying to cancel you behind your back, the probability you are being targeted because of political interests is almost guaranteed.

It's even worse because they're accusing the artist of both bestiality and pedophilia. I looked at the post briefly and instantly regretted it, everyone is taking this shitpost for all it's worth and then some. Such ridiculous drama over a nonsense meme that people could have just blocked the artist and people they disagree with, instead it's a building on fire. With the most immature people pouring gasoline on each other.

The pedophilia thing comes from some old art they drew. They had to migrate accounts because they were getting harassed. So that part at least is just your typical Twitter "fictional characters are the same as real people" stupidity. At least that part is consistent. The bestiality claims are a new level of stupid, though.

And, you know, nevermind that the same people bitching about Laios being mischaracterized are the same people that do nothing but post characters in out-of-character ships, among other things. Literally, "It's okay when I mischaracterize people."

Oh interesting, so that means there's two layers because I was largely seeing people talking about the ages of Laios and Izutsumi. Izutsumi's age is going to be one of the key factors of discourse in the coming weeks. Fictional hybrid cat girl in a fantasy world, and there's a lot of various fantasy age stuff in the series that doesn't match up with real life. I mean it's pointless to even give the discourse any thought, especially when I've had the misfortune of seeing people arguing since the anime started about Marcille's age. Some people claiming that Marcille is actually a child. I don't even want to think about it.

Also yeah people love to have their cake and eat it. Everyone wants to have fun with their fan content, while yelling at others for having fun with different fan content. Turns into a whole mess where everyone is at each other's throats over fan content, and biting at the ankles. Again, such a headache all around.
