Can someone briefly explain about TM Opera’s RL counterpart? I know he’s known as the End of the Century Overlord or something badass as that, but some fanarts including this one is sad. Is it because he lost his glory or suffered an injury?

Opera O didn't win the rest of the '99 season (as seen partly in RTTT) and his jockey, who was a novice at the time, was threatened to be fired by the horse's owner if he couldn't win any more victories going in to 2000. The pair then went on to becoming the Overlord as we know it, but not before effectively becoming the enemy that must be vanquished by any means necessary (which a certain doujin manga series touched on, available on Danbooru by yours truly).

And people at that era don't really like him, because he won too much. fans also pay less attention to him because the stereotype of that era where Derby winner is the best horse.
