I REALLY hope it's just me thinking too much about it, but there seem to be an implication in that coping mechanism that sensei would have preferred if momoi died instead of midori. Which make it even worse : imagine seeing your sister die in your arms, and before you even get to properly mourn, the one person you looked up to make you basically turn into your dead sister because they would have preferred if you were the one to die.

Yeah, that's how I see it. Awful. But perhaps inspired by game mechanics, Midori is a 3* unit while Momoi is a 2* unit. Very dark and cruel.
An artist who in his prime commonly drew Kasumi, often depicting her with unspeakable fates that have ranged from the outright suicide of her Admiral (like the scene depicted here) to the loss of limbs in naval service, though he also did just draw wholesome art of her being a dere underneath all that tsun.
