Yeah, I thought it was an odd wording choice myself, but my brain was thinking that the author was trying to make some sort of double meaning between the literal amount/heaviness of them and their use as somewhat of a mourner's veil, given her condition. That's the only thing I could think of for that particular vocabulary choice anyway. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It might also be a meta reference. The "bang swept over one eye" haircut on a pale-haired girl is kind of a meme at this point. Maybe it's a reference to the character type associated with that haircut being "solemn", the way that twintails was with tsundere?

Her left eye isn't "blind", it was stated at the beginning of the story that it was removed. Until the speech bubble said otherwise, I was afraid that the eyelids were gone as well, leaving an exposed empty socket.
