In Hyakki Yakko by Sekien Toriyama, Jorougumos are depicted as half-woman, half-spider yokai that controls a horde of fire-breathing spiderlings. Maybe the artist picked up this trait from there? Interestingly, there's none other reference that that Jorougumo resists heat save from that one source, every other source listed fire as Jorougumo's weakness, including games like SMT.

Apparently, MHR used that as inspiration for their monster Rakna Kadaki, so at least one game now has them resist fire.
