Artorias end up in another world, still gets a wolf pupper but the Abyss is still there. Can never escape the Abyss.
The thing to keep in mind about The Abyss is that it is all-encompassing, all-encroaching, and all-consuming. You cannot hide, you cannot run, you cannot win.

Artorias broke his left arm fighting Manus. He wields his sword with his right arm when you fight him in DkS1, while his left arm dangles uselessly. Artorias being left handed is supported by DkS2's Majestic Greatsword, which has a special moveset (and damage bonus iirc) when wielded in the left hand.
