I always thought the "writing the name of the perpetrator" was popularized by Detective Conan in anime. Then again, it was in Sherlock Holmes (the original novels), so it's pretty old, so yeah, it's a general mystery trope. You can see it in a lot of parodies, like, say, Akagi writing "Hiei Curry" while dead next to an empty pot.
