From the conversation he has with AUS' vocalist Aya, and Andreanna's profile, it's implied that to be an Abyssal Hunter you have to be an Aegir biologically modified by the 'Sea', which is both the large body of water where Aegir the place is and a living sentient Lovecraftian creature that can talk to Aegir the race.
