In 1856, Senator Preston Brooks caned Senator Charles Sumner on the floor of the Senate in regards to an anti-slavery speech. The speech contained defamatory remarks about Senator Andrew Butler, of the same state as Preston, and that was the direct incitement for the caning. Senate had also just adjourned, but that's neither here nor there.
Back in those days, congressmen could fight duels. Today, it's expected that congresspeople do not speak or cause any commotion while another is speaking. At least the British parliament allows heckling.

it wasn't to death, since Sumner died later in 1874 due to a heart attack.
