I just found, that there was a 1987 movie adaptation with David Carradine and Oliver Reed named "The Misfits Brigade" (alternate title "Wheels of Terror") directed by Gordon Hessler ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093546/ ).

The movie is awful. The german movie "Stalingrad" is actually a lot closer to feeling what a movie adaption of one of Sven Hassel's books would be like. Strangely enough, it has a scene that appears taken almost straight from his book "The SS-General", where the starving ragtag bunch of soldiers find the high ranking officer's hidden food stash and kitchen.
