Yeah, as a mercenary...she kind of sucks. I wouldn't mind seeing more of her business side. Not all of her equipment is magically reverse engineered or are hand-me-downs from the Chozo. In particular, her ships are provided by manufacturers of one sort or another.
For a comparison, Star Fox are actually a mercenary unit, they have expenses, they sometimes on occasion have to rough it because things are too peaceful.

I remember reading that the guy who co-created and is in charge of Metroid, the same guy who thought his ideas for Other M were so genius, he should personally direct Samus's voice actress in spite of not knowing English to be as flat and monotone as possible, personally vetoed the idea of Samus actually bounty hunting. The guys at Arkane making the Metroid Prime stuff originally tried to have Samus do some optional bounty hunting side-missions, but then when told what bounty hunting actually was, the guy was horrified and said that it was too dirty a job for his waifu to perform. They just chose "bounty hunter" as a job because they thought it sounded cool and had no idea what it meant.
