Those things sound like they would be super uncomfortable to use.

Taking the risk for a downvote here, but this is the closest approximation I've seen to the aftereffects of using a sensory deprivation tank.

Yeah, I spent ~23 hours in total darkness once (like dark enough where gen 3 night vision won't work without an illumination) once and I was pretty mentally fucked up by the time I got to get out. Does not sound like fun times. Luckily I was not soaking in saltwater like Mash. The weirdest part is when you sleep because then when you wake up you aren't sure if you are still sleeping or awake. It is the most surreal feeling.

Don't even worry about upvotes and downvotes. They are only for personal information at the end of the day since it isn't a contest.

I love those guys I didn't know they still made videos. I remember one with the Alkaseltzer sponsorship called "Worst Commerical Ever" with lobsters at a fishery. Funny part is where I used to live actually had those kinds of unprofessional commercials for local businesses and some where equally as funny because the transitions weren't made very well.

The sense I get is that short periods of sensory deprivation are endurable, in the same sense that short periods of doing without food are tolerable. Though of course the durations scale differently; doing without food for 24 or 48 hours is a much less injurious experience than doing without light for the same period.

This is based on what I've read, of course - I have never personally endured deprivation of anything truly vital to survival, voluntarily or otherwise, for any substantial period. Closest I've come to any kind of deprivation is a few all-nighters, and I figure the timescale at which sleep deprivation becomes injurious is even longer than it is for food deprivation.

Sensory deprivation tanks like the one here are used to achieve intense relaxation. The result is very similar to therapeutic hypnosis. Forced sensory deprivation like 79248cm/s’s experience can indeed be terrifying, but when you’re in a safe environment where you can choose to leave at any time it becomes a positive experience.

*I forgot to mention: the water is made very dense with epsom salt so you float on it and it’s kept close to body temperature to give a feeling of floating and weightlessness.

I guess I should clarify I wasn't really "forced" the idea actually was mine for us to dig into an area near where we knew bad guys would camp out so we could rise up in the middle of the night like zombies and stop them without fearing enemy reconnaissance when we moved in causing them to bug out or something. I was comfortable enough being buried. By fucked up it wasn't like my nerves were gone but it was just like my body was sore from lying still and everything just felt super intense. Closest thing I can think of is like imagine waking up in the middle of the night and immediately getting into a car and driving on the freeway. Like everything was easy and slow, but it just felt like going 0 to 100. Having never taken narcotics, it is the closest thing I can imagine being high feels like. Personally I'd rather be buried for 1-2 days than to go the same time period without food. Hashtag America.

And whoa, floating? That actually sounds kind of cool. However, I developed a habit of sleeping face down so I feel like I could drown myself if I rolled over and the water didn't wake me up lol.
