The movie really played up the fact that Goku is in the whole fighting game for the sheer enjoyment of it all.

Hell, even Vegeta who normally "wants to best Kakarot" admitted that he's getting stronger to defend the Earth.

He always was mostly in it for the fighting.

People just tended to turn a blind eye to it.

Its also a bit of a dub issue. The original English dub of Z made him sound a lot more heroic, particularly in his speeches to Freeza.
