You're correct, you certainly wouldn't prime one like she is doing...

Those repeating crossbows were also comparatively weaker in terms of tension, so the draw wouldn't be nearly as strenuous as Taihou is depicted (or much trouble at all, considering that it was assisted with a lever during cocking).

*Come to think of it, Taihou's contraption doesn't even have a physical lever. Auto cocking?

As you say, Taihou's reloading method is deliberately drawn in this way. There are no levers, no stirrups, and no crankwindlass for reloading in crossbow of Taiho.

Then the last way is that she have to reload it painfully.

And I do not think that the draw weight will be weaker than the actual crossbow, as it is used in actual combat.

Right. Interesting that Fumikane didn’t depict a way to prime her crossbow in her art (in the anime adaptation the thing cocks by itself, however that would work). I can almost imagine little fairies working inside trying to load it for her.

Actually, these sorts of crossbows were well known to be weaker (25 lbs vs an English longbow with 125 lbs draw? A full sized crossbow would be even heavier). To compensate for the lesser power, the bolt were often poisoned. There were more powerful ones, but they were much larger and mounted.

But yes, I see what you were trying to do. I certainly wouldn’t want to do it by hand. It’s hilarious, anyways.
