Not sure if this is an allusion to 2010 or 3001. 2010 had Jupiter being consumed by replicating monoliths to ignite it into a star (Lucifer), but 3001 had them forming cicular screens to block out sunlight from both the Sun (oriented towards Earth) and Lucifer (oriented towards the human colony on Ganymede). I'm guessing a translation would clarify which it is.
