You didn't get to choose. The hat takes in your wish, but still chooses where you are best suited. Mostly based by your personality and wish.

The "mob" here is taken from the computer gaming term for an NPC and/or generic enemy. In derived context, "mob" characters are minor characters, often nameless, background extras.
