When you think about it in Blue, it makes even less sense

True. In Blue, it's Gengar vs. Jigglypuff.

You're kidding me, right? Gengar was very good because of that Normal immunity. Like, 6 out of 7 players used one in the official tournament finals.

Maybe it just wasn't strong in your playthrough? Or the opponent's Gengar was weak or something.

Nah, I had in mind that Ghost / Poison type Pokémon were extremely weak against Psychic type Pokémon (especially Alakazam).

To be fair, back then they were the only ghost types... and were part poison. And ghost moves were REALLY weak, since they consisted of a grand total of two damaging moves: Night Shade (which does HP damage based on YOUR level) and Lick.

I tried bringing in a Lickitung from my Gold version to my Yellow and tried to use lick on a Drowzee, and it was unaffected by Lick.

If I remember correctly, there's an error that made Drowzee and Hypno immune to ghost type attacks.

All Psychics were immune to Ghost in the first generation games due to a bug in their programming.
