Jintsuu was taiha'd and Hatsushimo was sent to escort her back to base.

Though in-game whoever you sent always returned safely, it didn't seem to be the case here.
Good thing the Abyssals near Major Natsuki's base are pretty chill.

But it IS the case here. Apparently, the Fleet Command Facility has a "makes only friendly abyssals appear enroute" function.

I think both Hatsushimo and Jintsuu are from a different base.

I love that second panel (in the same way that I love stuff like the scene in Return of the Jedi when R2D2 electrocutes himself, mind you- I enjoy how tense it makes me feel). Like... it's incredibly effective at showing what a horrifying situation Jintsuu and Hatsushimo think they're in, and at conveying how determined Hatsushimo is to protect the noticeably more injured Jintsuu.
