Alright, here's a (hopefully) convincing argument: at least in my experience, the 'te-form verb + ne' as a pattern is essentially always a request. For example: "Yukkuri shite itTE NE" is not "I take it easy" or "I'm taking it easy." but "Take it easy!" "Ki wo tsukeTE NE" is never "I'll be careful" but instead "Please be careful."
