To be fair, it was because of the censorship laws of the west why tentacles are quite used in the first place.

Article 175 is more a holdover from wartime 'anti-obscenity' censorship laws, themselves continuations of sort from similar anti-obscenity policies (e.g. Publication Ordinance of 1869) during the Meiji era.

(Dream of the Fisherman's Wife itself predates the Meiji era, but it itself would have fallen under the Publication Ordinance and be similarly banned when it came into effect.)

The Allied (read: American) occupation forces were the ones who browbeated freedom of speech into the Japanese constitution. Granted, they were hypocrites and did censor criticism against the occupation forces as well as 'nationalist' material (this includes Kabuki plays, so you can see how overboard they went), but not pornography in general.

Oddly enough I don't think that'll work on Warspite. Her home turf is the frigid waters of the North. More likely she'll look down on the thin-skinned foreigners who can't even take a little bit of chilly weather, bloody balmy out compared to Devonshire wot.

I'm more interested in seeing Warspite in the rainy season - the time of year when there's so much rain you might almost mistake the place for London.
