What else would it be other than electric? Hydraulic? Internal combustion engine? Every garbage disposal I've seen turns on and off with a wall switch, just like an electric light.

Had to replace ours in the last couple years because it started leaking. Then again, it was around 10 -15 years old at the time.

And given that the internals are hell to get into, it was easier to just replace it.
Kogasauthor lucked out with it being a loose wire.

First world countries sure have some nice toys. We're still using plastic bags for trash collecting over here. Then again, it's dirt cheap, so that's a fair tradeoff.

From what I can find looking up the term, some units dehydrate the garbage to forestall rotting and the accompanying smell, also making it easier to burn. Others are a sort of composter, recycling raw garbage into organic fertilizer so you grow stuff like vegetables at home. Some offer both functions. One unit from Panasonic, at least, indicates it uses a platinum/palladium catalyst for odor control, so that may explain some of the initial expense. According to the Japanese Wikipedia, some municipal areas offer subsidies for purchasing garbage processing units, as they ultimately save the city money in collecting and burning the stuff.

I know about rice cookers, so I knew those wouldn't be the same as a rice processor. My first thought upon misreading the term here was that it's a device for automatically cleaning off and draining uncooked rice before you put it in the cooker.

Oh, I don't know if those actually exist, though I suspect they don't. That's just what I thought of when I misread 生ゴミ as 生ゴメ, so I just accepted it instead of re-reading more carefully.

Don't worry on both accounts. Such a thing apparently exists, and honestly? I sometimes do that too. Some kanji are too similar to each other for our mental health...

I think the confusion here is in word usage. The common American understanding of "garbage disposal" is a thing attached to the drain of your kitchen sink that chews up organic matter/leftover food bits before they go down the drain (I seem to recall America is one of very few places that allow this, and it's hell on our piping and the chemistry of our water treatment plants) whereas Moonspeaker describes this thing to be more like what we'd call a garbage composter; an electrically-assisted trashcan that helps the garbage stably decompose and/or removes odors.
