Panama Canal joke actually; Yamato class BBs were too wide to fit through the canal though the Iowa class could.

If I recall the Sentoku class subs were meant to infiltrate and destroy the canal, preventing US ships from going through and thus going the long way around South America.

I-401 was actually on her way to attack Ulithi (she never got the chance to attack the Panama Canal) when Japan surrendered. The crew quickly ditched the Seirans into the sea before surrendering to USN shortly afterwards.

The new expanded section of the Panama Canal have opened. Yamato could now fit

Now the limit is 161 feet wide.

Yamato a her widest was just under 128 feet wide.
