Of course, the Italians have their own subs... The Adua class was... not BAD for their role, but like most of the Axis submarines, they had an absolutely ATROCIOUS casualty rate.

In Italian sources, those are referred to more as the "Africani" sub-class of the "600" class (so called because their nominal displacement surfaced was 600 tons).

In the same, they are mainly seen as adequate for their intended role. What really bogged them down was the inadequate submarine doctrine of the Regia Marina (early in the war); only by 1942 they could perform as well as they could (and during Operation Pedestal they had some nice successes).

As for casualty rate... well, to a degree it was inevitable since they made up a lot of Italy's submarine strength. In any case, the Mediterranean did not prove kind to submarines: if, out of 59, only nine "600"s survived, all the U-Boote sent there were eventually lost in action.

Oh, yeah, and don't forget "i-503" and "i-504", which Sakazaki Freddy covered before.
