To be honest, that's what high school is like. You can't be anything out of the ordinary because people will pick on you for whatever it is. The sooner high school is over, the better. University is much better.
Well, didn't Sumireko isolated herself from the other kids on purpose? Her profile says she has some superiority complex so she tought she was too good to hang around with normal people. So it's hard so feel simpathy for her in this case.

More of a sense, people around you start to realise that making fun of another person, comes at great expense of their own future career potential. Around the age of about 15-6 people generally realise (in the UK from my opinion) that picking on someone leads to bad habits in the workplace and a quick discharge from work telling them not to come back. Unfortunately, a lot of people they pick on, end up being unable to repair and properly structure themselves, leaving them 1-2 years behind those that picked on them.

This makes me wonder why high school-themed stories are more popular than university-themed stories in medias and fan works.

For all the pain it caused you, it's probably the biggest time of discovery and change in your life. Even if all you discover is the baseness of humanity, and the biggest changes are the new bags under your eyes.
I dunno. I was pretty eccentric in high school going to class with the old Vietnam war surplus ALICE gear and no one gave me crap about it. A teacher called an officer on me once, but I knew most of the LE staff in our local department so we just laughed about it for a while. University seemed worst in my opinion since they are super aggressive in making you into their political pawn, go to this rally, vote for these people, think this way, etc. Luckily being in biological sciences reduced my experience of that quickly once I finished my core pre-reqs.

That and good ol' Rose-tinted nostalgia goggles.
You can say I'm biased because I consider my middle and high school years to be some of the worst moments of my life. I'm glad those days are gone and I sure don't miss them. University is soooooo much better.

That is what her Bio says. That said, ZUN has stated that in-game and supplemental materials for Touhou are biased by nature. So, it's possible that she tells herself that in order to cope with the loneliness from being ostracized, in an "I don't need them" kind of sense.

Jesus, I was hoping to forget that part of myself.
An eccentric girl who is not interested in "ordinary humans" who possesses unimaginable abilities and, at one point, saw a fantastic sight and founded a club devoted the search of the extraordinary.
... sometimes I’m wondering... if she’s actually happy with that life she got? She may now have new friends, but she only see them in her sleep, yet, in real life (outside world) things changes, people advance, yet, she doesn’t have a “real life flesh” friend she could play or talk or do Occultist things together... I just think that her club isn’t a real club, and even though she doesn’t need friends at all... I think she’s just wrong, and a little friend (regardless if it is a male or a female) couldn’t damage her, could it? (Depending of how much influence that friend is, since there’s a lot of people in the world with different personalities... I guess she and i may could be good friends...)
