Poor Hitler. This is what happens when ship girls join Masara's base.

This one actually kind of annoyed me.

Mister Führer, let's stop sending your ship-girls to that base or you will be dead before WW2 ends.

It'd be hilarious to see the pitchforks if somehow Yuu/Ro wins even when she's not on the list.

This sure is old news but some german ships were regarded as "he", e.g: Der Bismark, under the Kriegsmarine at least.
I'm not sure what the tradition is in Japan, but if they regard them as female, well, then there is a fine example of cultural joke (and surprise for Hitler).

I'm not sure what the tradition is in Japan, but if they regard them as female, well, then there is a fine example of cultural joke (and surprise for Hitler).

Most German ships are referred to as female (die Leberecht Maass), even if it's named after a male person (as is the case with most German ships). By convention, Bismarck would also be called "die Bismarck". The captain objected to this, as in his purported words "So powerful a ship as this could only be a he, not a she." So, everyone on his ship refers to it as male instead.

I guess Otto von Bismarck is such an badass statesman it's awkward to refer to something named after him as female, but that is more of an exception than the rule. The same source for the captain's words above has this as the footnote under the same page: "*Out of respect for the one and only commanding officer of the Bismarck this rule has also been followed in the German edition of the book."

Clearly, this indicates that referring to Bismarck as male is not standard practice.

Die Tirpitz, Bismarck's sister ship, defaults to female.

When the ship type is mentioned, however, the gender designation reverts to that of the ship type (note: all German nouns have gender) instead:

"das Schlachtschiff Bismarck": The(neuter) battleship Bismarck
"der Zerstörer Leberecht Maass": The(masculine) destroyer Leberecht Maass
"der Flugzeugträger Graf Zeppelin": The(masculine) aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin

The above pattern is also generally how most ships are referred to in German shiplogs/war diaries.

If the name contains an attributive, such as as a masculine title, then the ship is referred to as masculine.

"der Prinz Eugen": The(masculine) Prinz Eugen (Prince Eugene)
"der Graf Zeppelin": The(masculine) Graf Zeppelin (Count Zeppelin)
"der Kaiser Wilhelm der Große": The(masculine) Kaiser Wilhelm der Große (Emperor Wilhelm the Great)

If the name itself is a masculine noun, then the ship is also referred to as male. Usually you don't see this type of name, as it's not not usual naming convention for the Germans. Consider the following opera title, which refers to the titular ship:

"der Fliegende Holländer" The(masculine) Flying Dutchman.

The German wikipedia seems to standardize this by calling all ships as "Die <Name>" or "<Appropriate gendered article> <shipclass> <Name>" in the opening sentence. It isn't that consistent within the articles themselves, however.

    --

Japanese grammar has no concept of gender (or articles, for that matter), so ships are generally referred to by name. Or "that"/ "that ship"/"ship" if it's already understood.

    Are you sure, sir!?
Guten Morgen. My name is Leberecht Maass. Lebe is fine, though.
Yarisugi-kun, I'll have you look after them at yours. Yarisugi can also mean 'to go too far', the kanji used here is Spear+Cedar
Hehhaha! Since I sent them in as 'boys', they won't have been touched!
Fucking Germans. Send some virgin girls dammit!
    Hmpf. Boys this time, huh...?
I-I am Max... yes. Quite the manly name, no? Max starts out with a feminine pronoun but switches to the masculine
Mein Führer, a letter from Japan has come.
And after they're all settled in, take a photo in a fun-looking scene, okay. I'm sending it next month, see.
    Everyone in the Bath♡ Danke♡
    They're girls, yeah?
They've got girlish faces, but there's no way I can let boys live at the shipgirl dorms... It'd be a nightmare.
    The Men's dorms are fine.
Dear Admiral - This time it's shipboys!! They're boys, so you'll keep your mitts off them, won't you!! You gotta send a pic again!! Führer
