OK, but, why would they want to write "daybreak"? Why is Akebono writing "first light of the year"? I'm not getting what this calligraphy thing was supposed to be to understand how they're messing it up.

They are writing their first wish of the new year. Akebono chose a more poetic way of saying daybreak. The other 3 went with something more simple and just said daybreak. Technically, all 4 of them wrote the same thing. For a good first dawn of the new year.
Usually in calligraphy, you are supposed to write something more of what Akebono wrote. If a pregnant woman were to write her first wish, instead of writing something like "easy birth" it would be better to write something a bit more eye catching like "Beautiful Child Delivery" or something along those lines.
