The way Pixiv does the animations is that it shows a sequence of PNGs pretending to be a gif (hence you being able to pause it mid animation). It's a bit strange how it does it although I wonder if it's a bit more like a flash loop.

Which makes me wonder...how was the whole animation grabbed?

The parent is actually a GIF presumably from years ago
If you upload a normal GIF it seems to do that odd compilation setup as I've seen images an artist has off pixiv which is animated and on pixiv animated and it still does the odd PNG setup
And rebuilding the PNGs into a GIF lead to problems here with MD5 Mismatches and such. Maybe in time someone will build an extension to do it for you
