Yeah, I remember having connected mittens like that when I was...oh, 4 or 5 years old, I think. The string/yarn connecting them was designed long enough to run up the sleeve of your coat, across your back or front, and down the other sleeve, so you wouldn't have it hanging out to trip over (or knock things over) while you wore the mittens.
