The way I heard it, they had to do their marriage ceremony twice because they had the gender roles reversed the first time and consequently had bad luck until they did it right. I don't know whether Izanami was too macho in any other ways, though, and I heard that in the context of explaining Japanese conformity rather than patriarchy.

It was more like they couldn't bring anything into the world that wasn't inhumanly twisted and disfigured until they did it right. Bad breeding, basically.
