I believe you are indeed correct. The only thing I don't understand is Meliadoul with a spear...I know she can equip them...just never understood why you actually would. Unless you were leveling Lancer or something...

Lance's attack range gives you a chance to attack from a distance, relatively safe.

The maps in this quest mostly have monsters, so Meliadoul's skillset would be useless. So giving her a spear would be a better idea.
