I made a brief wiki for long_twintails, but I don't know what the consensus is regarding how long the twintails should be before they're considered for the tag, lest we wind up with tag misuse. I was assuming they'd reach around waist length, but some posts have them even at shoulder length.

Why is this even a tag? I struggle to think of a situation where long_twintails does something that the combination of long_hair twintails can't accomplish.
I don't know. I just happened upon it while doing some tag gardening and thought it needed a wiki. I can always nuke the tag if that's what everyone agrees upon. I too feel it's a little redundant since twintails are often done with long hair. I know the short_twintails tag exists to denote characters who do up short hair in that style.

Well, when there's two people in the image - one with long hair, and one with short twintails, your search would still match, so the tag is not completely useless.

To be honest, I don't understand why short twintails is valid either. It's almost entirely a combination tag for short_hair twintails, and the sole long-haired example in its wiki isn't even twintails; it's two side up.
Really, all of topic #1476 reads like a dubious compromise made to satisfy a contingent that thought one particular hairstyle was important enough to bear its own tag, yet the tag was then defined to encompass two completely different-looking hairstyles. The misgivings expressed in forum #13541 seemed prescient in anticipating the boom in obsessively specific tags that almost never get used because there are so many to keep track of and nobody has the time to populate them all. But the tag stuck anyway and now it's so deeply entrenched that at this point there's no getting rid of it.

That same reasoning could be used to justify bringing back tags like blue_thighhighs, et al. Has it not been unwritten policy for some time now to minimize the use of such narrow tags?
The two people in one image argument can be used for any combo tag. I don't think it holds weight unless the combo long_hair + twintails contains too much noise, which I don't think is the case here. The majority of twintails posts are long hair already, so it's no trouble to find.
In any case, long twintails would have to be populated for it to be useful, and I don't see anyone populating 300k twintails posts any time soon. +1 to nuking.
While we're on the topic of redundancy, what is the difference between plantar_flexion and toe_scrunch?

As for short twintails, I'd actually argue that it is a particular kind of hairstyle (as follows the sort of "pigtails" denomination) that would make it somewhat distinct from regular twintails. That is, unless we want to move the pigtails alias to twintails, but... ehh.

I believe pigtails would encapsulate short twin braids as well.
