The German state between 1918 and 1933, a republic established in the city of Weimar following the end of the German Empire caused by World War I and ended following Nazi seizure of power with Adolf Hitler becoming Chancellor and implementing sweeping changes that ended democracy and established a one-party dictatorship.
The term 'Weimar Republic' was not the formal name of the state, and was only became used more regularly from Nazi rule onward. The formal name of the state was the German Reich (Deutsches Reich), same as it was under the Empire and same as it would be under Nazi rule.
