water caltrop
Water caltrops (Trapa natans or Trapa bicornis) are starchy nuts known for their horned, black/dark red shells that resemble bat or buffalo heads and have a white kernel that tastes like a boiled chestnut when cooked. They grow on aquatic plants in marshes or ponds, primarily in Asia and Europe.
They come to season around the time of the mid-autumn festival and are an important part of traditional festivities.
