sugarcane
Tropical plant with tall, sucrose-rich stalks—typically green, but can be red, orange, yellow, purple, black, gray, or brown—from which sugar can be produced. Foods derived directly from sugarcane include sugarcane juice squeezed from stalks, and the stalk itself may be chewed on. Sometimes called sugar cane.
Not to be confused with bamboo, which like sugarcane is technically a grass and grows the same way—stalks divided into nodes (denoted by perpendicular indentations) and long internodes (the space between nodes)—leading to them sometimes looking very similar, especially in artistic renditions. Despite this, bamboo and sugarcane are not closely related.
