stanley cup
Ice hockey trophy, established in 1893 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup by its later namesake, Lord Fredrick Stanley of Preston. Originally contested as a challenge trophy and later among multiple leagues in a playoff format, it came into sole possession of the National Hockey League in 1926 and has been the league's official championship trophy since.
Not to be confused with the Stanley Quencher, which is also commonly known as a "Stanley cup".
