shanghai neckline

A neckline whose name is derived from the "shanghai-style qipao" which uses the neckline, commonly seen in chinese clothes (but featured in non-chinese clothes as well) where the buttoning runs sideways downward from the collar, usually reaching to the side of the bust. The collar itself is often a mandarin collar, but it can be of any type.

This general shape of neckline has been around since the ming dynasty, and were then worn with metal pankou and a standing collar. During the qing dynasty the style was heavily influenced by manchu clothes and had fabric pankou. Similar styles have been adapted all over the sinosphere, like on Vietnamese ao dai and the the mongolian deel.
