riding crop

A short, semi-rigid whip without a lash. Normally used for horseback riding, but nowadays more often associated with BDSM.

There is widespread confusion between riding crops and teachers' pointers, and teacher characters are often mistakenly depicted holding a riding crop. In general:

• A riding crop has some flex to it: it holds it shape but bends when force is applied. It usually widens and flattens into a rectangular shape at its tip.
• Pointers are usually thinner and completely rigid. Sometimes they may have an oblong cushion on the end.
