Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio; 17 December 1936 - 21 April 2025) was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City from 2013 until his death in 2025. Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025, Easter Sunday, after suffering from complications from pneumonia.
He was elected and became Pope on 13 March 2013 after his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, announced he would step down due to health issues. He is notable for being the first Pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere. Also notable for his humility over pomp and grandeur, was sympathetic to the LGTB community and having friendly relationship with other religions and different Christian groups.
