Shohei Ohtani (大谷 翔平 (Ōtani Shōhei), born July 5, 1994) is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher and designated hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball. Ohtani began his career with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan from 2013 to 2017 and made his MLB debut in 2018 with the Los Angeles Angels. Since 2024 he now plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers after signing a record-breaking $700 million USD contract with the team.
Ohtani is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time due to his unique ability as a two-way player, meaning he can both bat and pitch, a feat unseen in the major leagues since 1927. Additionally, him joining the Dodgers (alongside Yoshinobu Yamamoto) has attracted a strong interest in the team from overseas baseball fans in Japan.
