howa type 64
The Howa Type 64 (64式自動小銃) is a Japanese battle rifle used exclusively by the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Japanese Coast Guard. The weapon features a gas-operated mechanism, a foldable bipod, and a flip-up rear aperture sight. Like other 7.62×51mm NATO battle rifles, it is fed from a 20-round magazine
The rifle had major issues due to its bolt carrier located on the top of the receiver: First, the ejected shell casing is sent right overhead of the shooter, which may potentially injures him/her in the process. Secondly, such design allows dust, rain and dirt to enter the rifle and enables malfunction.
It is largely supplanted by the lighter Howa Type 89 assault rifle in service. With a scope, the Type 64 can also be deployed as a marksman rifle.
