gensou suikoden
An RPG series by Konami which revolves around the concept of the "108 Stars of Destiny" (108 recruitable characters, all of whom must be found and kept alive to get the best endings) and "27 True Runes" (magical items that grant immense magical power and immortality to their human hosts, usually with rather unpleasant side effects). So far there are five main games and three spinoffs, along with novelizations and manga adaptations of the main five.
It is loosely based on the Chinese novel Water Margin (Water Margin).
